I'm imagining you lying on the grass to ...Haha! I'm imagining you lying on the grass to take those photos... I have a cherry tree too, an Autumn-flowering one. It is harbouring some sort of pest that attacks its leaves. Every year the fresh young leaves are attacked by something that nibbles masses of circular holes in them, causing them to shrivel and die off. Then the tree produces another flush of leaves, though it is never very vigorous. The foliage looks sparse, even at the best of times. I wish I knew what this pest was, so that I could perhaps treat it. I reckon you could make your one more compact by some severe pruning. Why not try just a couple of branches and see what happens.
