Pretty Poppy (Danish Flag)

When I'm in the garden my eye is currently drawn to the bright red poppies in flower. I couldn't help but take loads of photos so here's a little overview of the Danish Flag poppy. The bees love it as well!

Variety: Poppy 'Danish Flag' (Hardy Annual), Carters Seeds, 900 seeds, 79p.  Height: up to 30".  Sown outside on 14 April 2012 direct into ground.

I thought the poppy and cornflower would go well together - not a huge impact from the young plants yet but maybe they'll bush out over the coming weeks.

  1. I tried that one year. The poppies blocked all the light to the poor corn flowers. I have tried it again this year but only scattered a few poppy seeds a couple of weeks after the cornflowers seeds were scattered.

  2. Oh wow! Fantastic photos, Kelli. You should put some of them onto UK Veg Gardeners, for more people to see.
In terms of the colour combination, you also need a white flower now! :)

  4. Wonderful photos Kelli...do you know how many times I've tried to capture a bee on my flower photos without success? :$

  5. I have never seen such a beautifully colored poppy. I have had a hard time getting them started here. I had them at the old house and they were hardy and huge. I found a gorgeous pink on Pintrest that I would like to try. I like the blue corn flower and red poppy together--a very nice combination.

  7. What a gorgeous poppy and your photos are really good! I have never seen a poppy colored like that! The blue cornflowers look pretty with the red and white of the poppy.

  8. Hi Kelli, poppies always make me smile! There is something happy and free about them but they have a habit of self seeding. The red ones are really striking especially in a clump.
