Bulbs (tulip, cyclamen, crocus, snowdrop)

Tulips are opening...

But they're tiny...

What happened?

Last year, I recall, they were 3 times the size!
It's like they have turned into mini tulips - a bit of a mystery.
Below: Crocuses outside are still holding up well (bigger than my tulips!).

Outdoor crocus up close.

Indoor grown crocus.
Daffodils and cyclamen are coming up under a Sycamore tree. At least...
I think this is cyclamen with a little yellow flower? It's been in the garden for over 15 years and was inherited from previous owners. I can never find this plant searching on the internet. When it is in full flower I'll post more photos & maybe someone can help me identify it?
Snowdrops are beginning to finish flowering, although...
there's still a good show in the distance around one of the trees.

The forecast is for snow tonight and sleety rain or snow at the weekend. Buuurrrrr!

  1. Is your little yellow flower Lesser Celandine? I too have some tulips which were grown in a container last year just about to bloom, but they're also much smaller this year. I think it's because they've been neglected in their container.

  2. The only tulips here yet are in the super market! I even checked yesterday to see if there are any green tips breaking through the ground. Nope. I will continue to enjoy your lovely pictures. cheers. ann

  3. You guys in NI have had a pretty rough Winter this time - maybe that is responsible for the small blooms on the tulips? Perhaps they used up a lot of energy just surviving?
I think Jo might be right about the yellow flower. My first impression too was that it is a Celandine.

  5. Love the above shot of your blue and yellow crocuses and your little yellow flower. I hope you stay warm and don't get too much snowfall.

  6. Your spring flowers are lovely. I have had problems with tulips coming back with no flower at all, so I am obviously no exert, but I have read that the tulip's foliage collects the food for the next year's flower. If you cleaned up/removed the leaves to early, you might get poor flowering the next year. That yellow flower does not look like a cyclamen to me, but I am sorry, I do not know what it is.

  7. Thanks for the comments. Yes, I think Mark and Jo may be right about the yellow flower being 'Lesser Celandine'. It seems many consider it a weed from my web search. It has indeed multiplied over the years.

Tulips - I'm thinking need divided as I haven't bothered with them since planting them quite a few years ago. (So many jobs to do!) Thanks for all your comments.
