Irish Castle Gardening

Over the weekend I visited Glenveagh Castle located in Glenveagh National Park in County Donegal, Ireland. This is a beautiful area of the Irish countryside and the castle grounds are quite impressive. Just a few photos taken in the rain! Even when raining, its beautiful!

At one stage this estate was owned by an American from Philadelphia, who purchased it in 1937, and later gave it to the Irish government.
The grounds contain lovely woodland walks, and lots of interesting planting.

The main plating scheme in the walled garden area contains alternate rows of flowers and vegetables. It makes quite an attractive display.

The gardener's cottage is lovely and is located in the walled garden - so quaint!

  1. This gardener's cottage at Glenveagh Castle looks so pretty, should like to stay there. I love kitchengardens with vegetables together with flowers.
    Have a nice gardening week!

  2. I really like the idea of a grow of flowers with a row of vegetables. This year I planted a row of zinnias next to the onions to add some color. I have 3 varieties of zinnias; most are about 4 inches high now, except for the pinks with only 3 that germinated. Our tour of Ireland included Donegal, but I don't remember now what we saw there. I just know that Ireland is beautiful.

  5. You're right, the veggies and flowers side by side are actually very pretty, and unexpected.

  7. I've been a couple of times and it is a stunning setting. When my kids were younger they swore they saw a ghost at a high window on the tower and when I brought them a couple of summers ago they remembered. It is a cool place, as is the Poison Glen just down the road.
